History
Thailand was known for centuries by outsiders
as Siam. It first made a real impression on the West at
the end of the 17th century, through the reports of a
series of inquisitive Frenchmen. They were not the first
Europeans to spend time in the kingdom, however. The Portuguese
sent an envoy to the capital in 1511, shortly after they
seized Malacca. The Portuguese joined resident Chinese,
Japanese, Malays and Persians to make the Siamese capital
one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the vast region
now known as Southeast Asia. Modern and predominantly
Buddhist, it is a Southeast Asian kingdom whose ancient
equilibrium and present standing mingle in evolving harmony.
Substantially, Thailand’s distinctive and unparalleled
characteristics stem from Indian and Chinese influences
(harmoniously blended by Thai eclecticism), rich ethnic
diversity, abundant natural and human resources, and over
seven hundred years of cherished independence (Thailand
is the only important Southeast Asian society never to
have been colonized by Westerners). Thailand’s traditional
culture is delicately tuned to the time-honored Buddhists
non-confrontational approach to life, and ideals of charity,
tolerance and loving-kindness. |

Thailand is naturally divided into four topographic regions:
1) the North, 2) the Central
Plain, or Chao Phraya River basin, 3) the Northeast,
or the Ko rat Plateau, and 4) the South,
or Southern Isthmus.
The North is a mountainous region characterized
by natural forests, ridges, and deep, narrow, alluvial
valleys.
Central Thailand, the basin of the Chaos
Pray River, is a lush, fertile valley. It is the richest
and most extensive rice-producing area in the country
and has often been called the Rice Bowl of Asia. Bangkok,
the capital of Thailand, is located in this region.
The Northeastern region, or Ko rat Plateau,
is an arid region characterized by a rolling surface and
undulating hills. Harsh climatic conditions often result
in this region being subjected to floods and droughts.
The Southern region is hilly to mountainous,
with thick virgin forests and rich deposits of minerals
and ores. This region is the center for the production
of rubber and the cultivation of other tropical crops.

Thailand’s national flag, is ceremoniously raised
each morning in every town and village, is composed of five
horizontal bands of red, white, and blue. Outer bands of
red representing the nation enclose equal inner bands of
white, evoking religion. The blue band, occupying the central
one - third of the total area, symbolizes the monarchy.
The harmony of design expresses the complementary nature
of these three pillars of the Thai nation. |

Dining in Pattaya
Dining can be classed as one of most pleasant
activities to enjoy in Pattaya, especially for those who
enjoy their the seafood: there are numerous kinds of fish,
lobsters, shrimp, crabs, oysters, squids, among all the
other marine delicacies. All are fresh and alive just
from the ocean displayed on ice in front of these seafood
restaurants, looking as it was meant to- perfect. These
restaurants invite you to choose any style you like to
prepare the seafood, actually the same as with beef, pork,
chicken and so forth.here is always a succulent variety
and excellent quality of vegetables, mushrooms, sauces
and spices along with boiled or "sticky" rice
are always at hand. Hundreds of food-stands around the
night spots are serving great food long after midnight.
Hundreds of restaurants, variety of styles, some with
dancing and live music, offering a selection of flavors
to satisfy any taste. We also have popular American fast-food
networks catering hamburgers, fried chicken, steaks and
pasta. Restaurants of virtually any Asian and European
cuisine are found here. Swiss,German,Indonesian, Italian,

spot, where travelers the world over face each other
amidst the smiling faces of Thai folks. Still, this
unique and enticing vacation spot retains numerous
retreats allowing one to withdraw from the hustle,
to seclude yourself in the gorgeous natural scenery
anytime you feel like it.
Thais fully recognize the importance of tourism.
The friendly and hospitable nature of the Thai people
boosts its promotion, frequently bringing back the
old and constantly rising up the number of newcomers.Ever
year this exotic beach resort welcomes about five
million visitors and so far, Regardless of its intense

place. Altogether, Police patrols and Tourist Police
jointly with security guards are on 24 hour-a-day
alert protecting tourists, along with the local residents
serving the guests. Hence, even a lady alone is completely
safe strolling around day-and-night.
Customs & Cultures
It is taboo to shake someone's hand here,( unless
they offer to shake yours), you should always press
both palms together with your fingers straight up,in
front of your chest just below your chin, with elbows
out.(this is known as the wai).
If you can say"Sawadee krap"(
for men) or "Sawadee ka"
(for female) which means either "Hello"or
"Goodbye".
You never wai a person lower than you (like a child),
but always to someone elder than you. Or more important
than you, (like royalty).or a doctor,or similar.Dont
do it to the staff in your hotel,or restaurants-they
will wai to you,but you are their guests.
You never point your feet at anyone as this is thought
of as very rude,as the feet are classed as the dirtiest
part of the body .Easily done if you are relaxing
after a long day,and you remove your shoes in the
bar.
Never touch a Thai on their head as this is deemed
sacred,so be careful.
Never mock the monarchy or say anything derogatory
about the king.
Always take your shoes off when visiting a temple, and
ladies cover up as it is frowned upon to wear shorts
when visiting religious places. If you do visit a wat
(temple) remember you should never have your head
higher than the Bhudda, crouch if necessary. A female
must never touch a monk.
If you do get invited into someone's house remember, shoes
off!
Try not to be over affectionate in Thai company as
it is frowned upon, but in Pattaya it is really no
problem. You will rarely see Thais showing affection, but
its ok for westerners. (or as we are known - "Fallangs")
Don't Judge Thailand by Pattaya,as it is
not a true reflection of Thailand, some people have
called it a"Disneyland for adults".There
is something for everybody here, we have water sports
of every kind available, on this page you can see
a small sample of the delights that await you here
in the "Land of smiles". We have almost
year long sunshine, with a nice breeze off the sea.
The sea has a mean temperature 28 degrees all year.
